Reading and Refocus

LESSON 1

A Letter to Miguel's Mother     Dear Mama,

311   There is so much to tell you, Mama. Everything here

I     seems different, but, at the same time, everything seems the       same. Yesterday was a good example.

332   At 7: 00 the alarm clock rang and woke us up. I

turned on the radio, and we listened to the news. But the

news is in English, not Spanish. For breakfast, we have

offee and bread, but the coffee and bread don't taste the

same as they do at home. Even the water tastes different !

    At 9: 00 I left the house,

At night, after dinner, we talked and watched

television. The movies here are the same:war stories,

westerns, and mysteries. At about 9ཚ one of Pedro's

friends stopped in to say hello. At about 11༼ Pedro

called each one of his twenty girlfriends to say good night

and told each one a different story, I like Pedro more and         more.

I learn a little more English every day. Yesterday, I   learned the word

"embarrassed. "Love,Miguel

p.s. You asked for a photograph. Here it is. The girl next to me

    is Marta. She lives upstairs.

LESSON 2

Laura's Story

341   My father died the year I was born. Life was difficult

in Spain in those years. My mother decided to move to Mexico

because people said things were easier there. And there was no

342 reason to stay in Barcelona. It broke my mother's heart to

34 3 leave, but it also broke her heart to stay. She sold her diamond

ring, the only thing she had, and bought two tickets to

    Mexico.

344   There, in Mexico, I forgot yesterday's miseries. After

345 all, I was only a child. But our new life was not like my

346 mother's golden dreams. s I grew up and had to go to work.

I was very unhappy. We were poor and alone in the world.

347   At eighteen, I married an older man. He had a little

348 money, and I spent a few happy years with him. I got new

349 clothes and lived in a fine house. s But I didn't love him, and I

think he knew it, too. It wasn't his fault. He wasn't a bad

husband, he wanted a quiet life and a big family. I didn't.

350 We fought about it and made each other miserable. Finally we

got a divorce. After that I came to New York.

lESSON 3

Letter to Mr. Farias

        My dear husband, Francisco,

I miss you, my dear, but we are happy and healthy,

and the children send their love. Paulo is busy every

minute. He is just like you, so sensible, maybe too sensi

ble. He thinks about business all the time. He doesn't

        have any real friends here.

353   Joana is growing up before my eyes. Every day she

grows more mature, less shy, and more confident,

She~s getting serious about art again, so she's going to

take some courses at one of the schools here. 4 She's

talented, but not very patient. She has a lot to learn.

I am enjoying the Fair, but most of all, I am

enjoying the children, I am very proud of them. At

first, Joana was nervous about her English, but now she is

almost fluent, As a matter of fact, she is teaching me!

~159   So, my dear, how are you?How are things at

home? I miss you. I read and reread all your letters.

                                  Your devoted wife,

MR. NIKZAD.'   What are we going to do with Ali?

MRS. NmZAO, What do you mean, dear? He's only six

~2 駗 MR. NIKZAO,   He'll be seven in a few weeks. It's time to

                        think about his future.

        MRS. MgZAD,   Oh, dear.

MR. ~IKZAO,   You spoil him, Zahra.

MRS. NIXZAO, And you're too strict. You're always                         criticizing him.

MR. NmZAO,   Because he never behaves. Why can't Ali

                        be more like Hussein?

MRS.'NIIKZA1D: But dear, they are different people.

They'll never behave the same                         way.

MR. NIKZAD:   We take him to the Fair, and what does

                          he do? He runs away!

MRs. NmZAO: He's a very independent child.

MR. NmZAD.'   I'll never understand him. And what an

                        imagination!He thinks ice cream

vendors are secret agents. He talks to                         animals and toys.

MRS. NIIKZAD: All children are like that, dear.

MR. NIKZAD,   No, Zahra, all children are not like that..

LESSON 2

369 MR. NIKZAD:   Last year he misbehaved because he didn't

3 7 0             understand English. This year you won't

be able to use that excuse,

MRS. nIKZAD.. Then we'll have to find a school for children

                      like Ali.

MR. ~I~ZAO..   Where will you find a school for stubborn

371             children with bad manners? He won't listen

                    to anybody,

MRS. NmZAD: He's not stubborn; he's independent. But

372             don't worry. I'll look for a school for

                    creative children,

373 Ma. NIg, ZAD..   Won't you ever believe me? The boy needs

                      discipline.

MRS. r~IKZAD.. Let me try, Simon. Maybe I can find the right school.

3 74 MR. NIKZAD:   All right, Zahra. But next year, back in Iran,

                    things will be different,

375 MRS. NIKZAD: Be patient, dear. Ali will make you proud one                     day.

MR. NIKZAD:   Where is Ali now?

      MRS. NIKZAD: Watching TV.

MR. NIKZAD:   Are you sure? It's very quiet in there.

MR. YAMAMOTO:   You know, Frank, I'm not as young

                              as I was.

          FRANK:         No one is, Father.

MR. YAMAMOTO:   You're right. Help me with my coat,                             Frank.

442   Am I? In my first job, I was a secretary. When I married
443     my husband, I quit. After I left him, I went back to the

UNIT 28
Congratulations, Paulo !
LESSON 1
PAtlO.. Do you remember my idea for an art competition
                  at the Fair?
466     JOANA, Yes. How did they like it?
467/468 PAULO: Very much. In fact, we're starting the project
                  immediately.
469         And guess who's in charge?
        JOANA: I don't know. I give up.
470     PAULO: You give up too easily. ,?,Your brother! Who
                  else?
JOANA.. Congratulations, Paulo! Now maybe you can take
                  a few days off.
471           You work harder than anyone else in that
                  office. ~n
PAULO.. Joana, you don't take time off when you want a
                  promotion.
472     JOANA.. You even eat more quickly than you used to.
PAULO: Hey, I didn't ask for a lecture!
JOANA: I'm sorry, Paulo. I think it's wonderful. Now tell me
about the competition. What are the rules?
                  Can Michael enter?
          PAULO: Michael Crawford?
473     JOANA.. Sure. He paints better than anyone I know. 47~
                  When does the competition start?

LESSON 2
PauLO:   We won~ announce the contest until Mr.
              Crawford finishes the brochure.
JOa.~A:   Oh, is he doing the brochure for you?
  PAl-CO:   yes.
JOANA:   What does his office look like?
PAULO:   It's large enough, and modern and busi-
nesslike. 475 And very formal--too formal,
perhaps. 476 Why do you ask?
JOANA..   Just curious, I'm trying to imagine Michael in
              that office.
  PAtILO:   What do you mean?
JOANA:   Michael gave himself a deadline. Either he
does well this year, or he gives up art and
goes into business with his father. 477
PAULO:   How well is "well"?How is he going to mea-
sure success? Does he have to paint as well
              as the masters?
JOANA:   I don~t really know. But he has to prove some-
              thing to himself.
PAUL{):   Then this competition could be his big chance.
  JOANA..   Yes, it could.

UNIT 29
Reading and Refocus
LESSON 1
          Michael's Brother, Gary
[After the party, Michael tells Joana about his brother. ]]
481   Gary, my brother. Gary Whitney Crawford, Jr. He looks
482 just like me, you know, Joana. 4s~ At least he used to. 482
483 He~s eighteen months older than I am, but as kids we used
to wear the same clothes and pretend we were twins ! Gary
was the greatest brother in the world, and in many ways,
484 he was my father, too. Dad didn't have time for me. He was
    too busy. 484
485   Gary and I went to the same college, but that's when
things started to change. 48s He studied business. Why did he
486 study business?Because my father wanted him to. 4s6He used
to study night and day. I studied art and worked hard at it.
487 But I had time for my friends, too. Gary and I saw each other
    less and less. 487
488   When Gary graduated, he went to work for my father. 4ss
489 He stayed at the office until late at night. He kept to himseff
a lot. Like my father, Gary was always busy. 4a9
Then one night, Gary and my father had a terrible fight.
The next morning Gary moved out. We never saw him
    again.
About a year ago, a college friend of mine saw Gary in
London,. He was with a woman and a baby. My friend was
sure it was Gary. He never forgets a face. 490

LESSON 2
        An Application to College
            Part X: The Essay
Write an essay of 200-500 words. You may choose any topi/c for your
  essay.
491       I would like to write about two people, a man and a
492/493 woman. 4s~ They live quiet lives. 492 When they go out
into the street, no one asks for their autographs, but
494   everyone in their profession knows and respects them. 4ssThey
work as a team. 4s4 The woman is a journalist. The man is
        a photographer.
495       They met on their first job. 4ss They both worked for
a famous picture magazine. She wrote the articles, and he
496     took the photographs. The magazine sent them all over the
world to cover important events. 496 They won many
        awards and medals.
497/498   One day the magazine went bankrupt. 497 Many other
magazines and newspapers offered them positions, but at
this point the man and the woman decided to work inde~
pendently. 49sShe decided she wanted to write a book
499     about her experiences at the magazine. He wanted to work on
        photographic essay on bonsai. 499
500       For once, they did not worry about deadlines and
editors. 500 Theyenjoyed their work and grew
professionally. Their books were successful. When they         finished
their
separate projects, they decided to work as a team again.
Now they are ready to go, day or night, on a moment's
notice. When there are earthquakes in Honduras, they are
there.when there are battles in the Middle East, they are
there.When there are local tragedies,they are there,too.My
parents are a great team.
                              James Yamamoto

LESSON 3
              At a Coffee Shop
Look at all those people. They all have good jobs
and houses in the country. OK, maybe all of them don't
have houses in the country, but they probably have more
501     than you. Laura, stop it. Don't feel so sorry for your-
502     self. 501Nobody likes to get out and look for a job. 502
503/504   I'm getting depressed again. 50slt's time for a
change, s04Maybe I'll meet someone in an elevator, and
he'll offer me a wonderful job. My worries Will be over.
          Stop it, Laura. Be realistic.
505       Yes. It's time for a change. I hate offices. I don't
hate work --that's why I got the job with Crawford--but
506     I don't like offices, s05 I don't feel human in an office.
I'd rather work with people than with files and
507     typewriters, s06 But how?I could be a real estate agent, a
travel agent, a ... anything, as long as it isn't
          boring, s0z
Claire's going to law school. Crawford's son, what's
        his
name?... Michael. Yes. He wants to be an artist. Henry
Leeds likes his job. He doesn't want to do anything else.
It's possible to be happy at your job.
508       I could teach Spanish. No. I don't have the patience.
I think I'd like to be my own boss. s0s I like to sew. Maybe
I could open a small dress shop. I wonder how much you
        need to start a shop.
500       My head is spinning. I must be getting hungry, s09I'm
510     tired, too. Maybe I'm getting a cold. s~0No, you're not
58
      getting a cold. You're just depressed.And scarede. A dress
    shop.
I'll have to think about that.
WAITER:   Would you like to order now?
